I've fallen in love again. This time it's with the work of Kelly Swallow, an upholsterer that I saw with the boyfriend at Tent London last year. The only thing stopping me from marching away with the beautiful wing-back armchair she was displaying was the vague and nagging uncertainty that it might not really fit on the tube. Her work is similar to Squint London's in that she uses vibrant material as a patchwork, creating something sharp and modern as opposed to fusty and dowdy. Images below from KellySwallow. So it is with some nerves that I announce my next project which is to upholster my own patchwork chair! I intend to start looking for fabric pieces when in Portugal - any advice gratefully received!Watch this space for progress updates.
I adore bright and vibrant patchwork chairs! Sounds like a fantastic idea to create your own. It should be fun just collecting the fabric to go on it - are you going to focus on choosing any particular colours, or just a random assortment?
@Fresh Design Blog: I think that I'll go for darker and stronger colours. It's going in a very neutral room so I want it to pop! I'll try to find some fun bits of fabric, something from Portugal obviously, maybe something with owls on it (I love owls) and the boyfriend has offered up a couple of ties I can cut up to make buttons. I want some of the material to be personal but for the rest, I suspect I'm just going to trawl thrift stores and high end places looking for scraps! Any advice? Have you done something similar? Thanks for stopping by :)!
Got something you'd like me to look at, consider or review? Or just want my recipe for the ultimate Amaretto Sour? Either way, leave me a comment or send me an email.
London Lisbonite is a design blog featuring interior design (mainly international but with a strong Portuguese design focus), homewares and DIY projects. It also acts as an electronic pinboard for everything beautiful or useful that I find in my travels, as well as DIY guides. As a lifestyle blog, London Lisbonite also includes recipes and shop/bar reviews.
