Last Friday saw the boyfriend (top hat, cape, dagger) and I (corseted long dress, billowing sleeves, fake blood caked across my throat) at the Last Tuesday Society Danse Macabre in honour of Halloween. Sufficient to say that their events are always the most imaginative and amazingly staged (if you live in London and haven't found them yet, you're missing out). Forget cheap cobwebs sprayed around a pub, think decadent long rooms stretching out under the London vaults, filled with hung game, golden dancers on heaped tables of food, hottubs and general gorgeous darkness (including a mariachi band). This got me thinking about London nightlife in general, most of which I freely admit I'm too old to appreciate. However, one Last Tuesday Society I'm kicking myself for having missed was the Lilli Vanilli booklaunch. Lilli Vanilli, aka Lily Jones, is a London baker that specialises in turning the sugary, pink and glittering world of cupcakes on it's head. Originally a graphic designer, she began baking as a hobby and then started selling her cakes at Swanfield market near Brick Lane. Her cakes are made by hand in her own kitchen in east London. Try her marzipan beetles, fingers in pies or bleeding hearts, all made out of sponge. If you didn't make it to the book launch either, she's stocked in Harrods or you can contact her through her website. Move over Haribo gummy teeth, Lilli is the ONLY person you should turn to for Halloween treats!
