"Girl of the pebbles": Nini Andrade Silva
Nina Andrade Silva, internationally renowned interior designer that references her Portuguese roots and hometown of Funchal on Madeira in a lot of her work, launched a furniture collection. The range is called "Garota do Calhau" (loosely translated, "girl of the pebbles") and starts at about €2700. The simple lines of the pieces are a surprise when you consider that this designer's most famous project was the decoration of The Vine, a luxury hotel on Madeira that I would be prepared to sacrifice quite a lot to go and visit for a long weekend. She took inspiration from the grey simple pebbles on the island and has really gone to town with this garden furniture range, incorporating pebble chairs, pebble sun loungers, a pebble bed and even a set of pebble footstool/pouffes! If you can't get to Madeira, you can bring the idea of Madeira (the real Madeira, not the one currently portrayed in that ridiculous advertising campaign where the locals all appear to be desperate to let us know they're still around) to you.
