Portuguese artist: Joana Vasconcelos
Joana Vasconcelos is a Portuguese artist that's hard to shoehorn into one particular category. She works with a variety of mediums and most of her work is joyful and colourful. She often uses patterns that reflect those used in traditional Portuguese design and crafts and does a lot of large, site-specific installations. I love this "necklace" she made for the Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem in Lisbon). Made of nautical buoys and nautical cables, the piece was called the Jewel of the Tagus.
