One of the lesser known dinner party rules is: Thou shalt bring macaroons. Or at least, it should be. Although few people would turn up to a dinner party empty handed (as well as empty stomached), what to bring your hosts is a decision fraught with pitfalls. If you buy wine, your poor host then spends the evening worried you're offended that they're serving the wine they painstakingly chose to match the meal rather than your offer. If you buy flowers, they have to find a vase. If you buy chocolates you blend in with the crowd (and are likely to get them back when you return the invitation). OK, so I sound spoiled - obviously any gift is thoughtful and will always be appreciated - but I'm trying my hardest to make the case for macaroons as strong as possible. So worry no more about what to bring: enter the Laduree macaroon. They're tiny round cakes, smooth on the outside and soft in the middle and available in pretty much every colour and flavour you can imagine. To top it all off, they come in beautiful boxes. Sadly they're not available online so you'll need to head down to their shop in Harrods or the Burlington Arcade but the effort expended in travelling will be paid back threefold in invitations! Personally, I will guarantee anyone turning up with one of these pretties an extra roast potato on their plate (I spoil you all, I really do...)
Got something you'd like me to look at, consider or review? Or just want my recipe for the ultimate Amaretto Sour? Either way, leave me a comment or send me an email.
